Canada has more than 100,000 teachers, but only about 20% of them are certified sex educators.
Many of them struggle to find students for classes because they’re not licensed.
CBC News sat down with the chief education officer at Toronto’s Leduc County Schools, who said he can’t say what percentage of the teachers who take the classes are sex educators, but the majority of teachers do have some experience.
“I would not put it above the percentage of sex education teachers,” said Leduc Regional School District chief education official Marie-Ann Hernández.
“In the end, it’s really the sex ed that is teaching.” “
The district has about 25,000 students and about 7,000 sex ed teachers. “

Hervasays about 20 percent of teachers in the district are sex ed educators.
“The percentage of teachers that are sex education experts is about 10 percent,” she said.
“So we do have a very small number of people who are certified.”
In a statement to CBC News, the district said it is working with a number.
It said the district is working to ensure that it’s staffed with sex education specialists.
“We have training to meet the needs of sex educators and they are trained to be sex education professionals,” said the statement.
However, in the meantime, the primary responsibility of the sex education team is to teach the students sex education and to teach them what sex is and how it should be practiced.” “
When we have a problem with a teacher or a student, we can reach out to them and provide support.”

Hertz said she has no doubt the district would have to hire more sex ed experts. “
At the end of the day, we have to educate students to have healthy sexual relationships,” she added.
Hertz said she has no doubt the district would have to hire more sex ed experts.
“My hope is that we can hire more certified sex education practitioners and that will create a better sex education environment,” she told CBC News.
Hery said that’s why the district has a program in place.
“Our district is very proactive in getting people in to our schools to talk about sex,” she explained.
“They do the homework.
They do the social studies.
And we’re able to make that happen with the sex educators.”
Hertzl said she knows the district does its best to ensure sex education is safe and inclusive.
“It’s an incredibly difficult area and we all know that,” she admitted.
“Sex education is something that needs to be taught in the context of sex.
It’s a very complex topic and we’re all adults here.
We all need to have that conversation and we need to get it right.”
